For Students

The Santa Fe Safe Zones is excited to announce we are launching two support groups for youth who are transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, genderfluid, other similar gender identities, and/or are questioning their gender.

Groups will include guest speakers on topics that trans youth and their families often have questions about, such as medical, legal, policy, mental health, and overall trans 101. There will also be time for open discussion and peer support.

All groups are:

Virtual (on Zoom)
Facilitated by two adult staff
FREE!!!

There will be two separate support groups starting in February and running through May:

1. Trans/non-binary youth (ages 13-18*)
1st & 3rd Wednesdays each month
from 3pm - 5pm

2. Parents and adult family members of trans/non-binary youth
2nd & 4th Wednesdays each month
from 5:30pm - 7:30pm

While the groups are focused on the Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico area, all are welcome.

For ALL queer, trans, and allied youth (ages 13-18*): the NM Genders and Sexualities Alliance Network offers weekly groups on Tuesdays from 3:30p-5:30p (register for these at www.tinyurl.com/nmgsanonline2020).

*In some cases, youth who are 12 or 19 may be appropriate to participate.  Please contact Jenn Jevertson in advance for permission @ jjevertson@sfps.k12.nm.us

Additionally, the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico has tons of resources and hosts additional support groups for various age groups (including younger children) and populations throughout the state.

Coursework

Online coursework has two modalities. 1.) Face to face in a google meeting. To get to a google meeting, you need to go to: meet.google.com

Once there, it will prompt you to join a meeting. In order to join a meeting, you need the code for the class you are attempting to go to. If your teacher is choosing to meet you online they will provide you with the code for that meeting.

A couple of things about the google meeting. The teacher will start the meeting. The code does not work if the teacher has not started the meeting. Also, spelling counts. I know, I know. In this day and age, spell check and auto-correct can't save you. Spell the codes correctly, and wait until class starts. If the code doesn't work, wait a minute, and try again.

The second modality: students will start accessing their courses in Open Access. Here is a video on finding Open Access: Check it out by clicking here. The rest should be communicated with your teacher.
