Last Friday, we held our first district-wide Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Day! While the Office of Student Wellness has been focusing on SEL for years, these efforts increased since the pandemic. SEL Day was an initiative that began last winter at Capital High School in collaboration with Communities in Schools. Students participated in a variety of activities across the district, such as yoga, gardening, scribbling and art, movement and dance, and much more! These activities help students and staff develop healthy identities, manage emotions, feel and show empathy and make responsible and caring decisions. SEL builds social and emotional skills that increase student engagement and has been proven to improve academic performance. Participating in SEL programs has been linked to decreased emotional stress, better relationships with teachers and stronger feelings of belonging and inclusiveness in schools. You can read more about SEL Day from The New Mexican: https://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/education/santa-fe-public-school-district-hosts-first-ever-districtwide-social-emotional-learning-day/article_5d7b3960-3874-11ee-aee4-7bc93345e577.html

Santa Fe Public Schools is now accepting applications for free or reduced-price meals. Although we will feed all students at no cost in the 2023-24 school year, we must collect an application for Free and Reduced Meals. The data collected from this process determines eligibility and funding for P-EBT, Title 1, E-Rate, and other programs. Only one application per family is needed. The application can be completed online at www.myschoolapps.com Questions? Contact Tina Anaya at 505-467-3600.

Filling out this form ensures your child will receive maximum funding for benefits like Summer EBT (formerly Pandemic EBT). An accurate count of those who qualify ensures other initiatives continue, including after-school programs. Funding for lunch programs is tied to technology money, including access to quality internet.

We wanted to take a moment to emphasize the continued importance of submitting free and reduced lunch applications for your children. These applications play a vital role, especially now that SB4 (Healthy Universal School Meals) is tied to funding and programming. The Public Education Department relies on accurate counts of qualifying students to ensure that the necessary funds and services are available to schools across New Mexico. By submitting your free and reduced lunch applications, you contribute to this crucial process and help support our schools and students. The benefits of these applications go beyond just providing nutritious meals to our children. They enable the Public Education Department to allocate funds for various educational programs and initiatives that directly impact our students' learning experiences. These resources can make a significant difference in their education and overall well-being. Together, we can ensure that every student in Santa Fe has access to the resources they need to thrive.
